This week a major push forward happened in the Transgender community.
But it wasn’t in the Political World, the bulbs flashed in the Fashion World for Candy Magazine’s 5th Anniversary ‘Transversal’ Issue. Candy is a Trans community focused magazine founded by Luis Venega. This is the first time a large group of Trans-Super Stars have gathered for a magazine shoot, and a cover photo at that!
It’s all about the glamour that the presence of the world’s leading editorial photographer, Mariano Vivanco, commands. Vivanco shoots for all of the major mag’s. Vogue, Vanity Fair, and GQ have all lined up for breathtaking images that come from the mind of the Peru born Mariano. The ravishing looks of these trans women, and styling by Yasmine Sterea gave the photographer a colorful canvas to work with. And the results for Candy, are stunning… the girls look amazing. The multi-generational line up gathered is fantastic, from legendary Carmen Xtravaganza to Laverne Cox, Janet Mock, and Trans Party Doyenne, beauty, and singer Dina Marie aka Dina Delicious. Also included in the shoot is Juliana Huxtable, who I’ve been lusting over on SoundCloud. The self described Sapio Glam-sexual is a multi-disciplinary artist and performer, and if you haven’t heard of her… check your mainstream-o-meter.
I’ve only known Dina on a more personable level since she began hosting one of her fabulous parties at Pangea, where I hold court as—according to the honorable Charlie “Janet Preston” Finch—maitre d. Pangea became the likely new home for several Transgender Cocktail Parties, due to the shift in ownership of many Manhattan establishments. Not only are they catering to a more conservative crowd, the ownership is super conservative—fancying having a banker boy appeal, with their knock-off reclaimed wood, craft beer motifs. The Trans-Revolution is in full swing and growing momentum by the social media second, and night after night of very public events, and now honored by one of the world’s top fashion photographers. So what does that say about Manhattan?
