Just back from Detroit where I clocked in an 18 Mile bike tour of Motor City. That full story will appear in a few weeks. But in the meantime, Shepard Fairey was in town last month to create an 18 Story Mural on One Campus Martius in Detroit for Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock Real Estate Services. And today the Detroit Free Press let us know that City Officials are not too happy with Fairey’s additional works he self-commissioned at no charge extra.

According to the Detroit Free Press: “A warrant for his arrest was filed in 36th District Court on Friday. He faces two counts of malicious destruction of property, which carry a maximum penalty of five years in jail, plus fines that could exceed $10,000.” Apparently Fairey also went on an unsanctioned wheatpaste binge on a few other buildings with his iconic Andre the Giant Obey poster.

We all know that while Detroit is once again on the verge of bustling, it is far from recovery and is very much hard up for cash. If you remember Detroit of say 20 Years ago, wheatpaste is probably the least of their worries and should probably focus on desegregating, and creating jobs not just for the techie elite and connoisseurs of all things artisanal.
